Whats up guys, I'm Isaiah, everyone just calls me Zay Zay *no clue why they say it twice. lol* I'm a big Porsche fan and currently hoarding every broken Ford Focus that people get rid of. Hahaha. Anyway my story starts here. I came into some money, and of course being who I am I start looking for a reasonable project Porsche. I'm not familiar with working on the mid and rear engine layouts yet, so to be on the safe side I went hunting for a 924, 928 or a 944. After looking locally for a while with no luck, I took to copart where I purchased most of my focuses.

...not long into my search...

Oh wow you're going down the RP route as well :D 928,924 and 944 are underrated Porsches, they got their own quality but always got offset by the 911 purists......damn them all. I've seen quite a lot of cheap 944s in US back then, and considered to get one, but in the end I pulled back due to the current amount of cars I own right now. I can't simply have another project waiting to be finished in the queue

Not sure if the engine works or the car runs given the car's condition, so what's your plan with it? Rebuild the engine from scratch or swap it with anything else?

2 other bids came in, I didn't want to break 2400v$ because I can get an "ok" clean title one for about 5000v$. Bidding rose to 1800v$ so I capped at 2000v$ and won!

20,000
- 2,000
18,000v$ to play with...minus taxes, gate and auctions fees

It cranks and runs, doesn't sound too healthy tho. Its the turbo version but all the turbo plumbing was in the trunk. Suspension seems pretty tore up (sitting on some bull$hit cut springs). Sits on 2 different sized steel wheels and 2 of the 944 "premium" wheels, one of those are cracked tho. I seen a pretty solid SC300 with the rear end damaged while on the yard during the pre-auction inspection. Potential for a swap....

Nice find man, might be all broken for now but hey, you got yourself a Porsche! :D Last year i got one from a salvage auction as well but it was a badly crashed 997 which i've managed to fix by now. 924s and 944s are dirt cheap in America, maybe you could've found one in better shape for the same money but if you copped a legit Turbo that was one hell of a deal!

I really want a 996, but this is a good first build. Def won't be my daily and probably not gonna be stock for long considering the engine sounds like a bearing is spun over. But #PorscheGang anyway! :D

Went thru and inspected what I could save, what needed to be scrapped and what I need to order. I am already looking at alternate engine options because of the bearing rattle and the faint sound of a rod knocking. In the mean time...

Working with National Speed in Wilmington to see whats available in a budget conscious price range. Really want a VQ or VR but anything that will work with my budget after getting everything replaced would be great

...GOT SOME TIME IN THE LAB LAST NIGHT

I got the mounting holes for the seat brackets tapped and replaced with new bolts so I could get the passenger seat mounted back in the car. Repaired the broken door latch on the driver side that I thought I was going to have to replace and got the parts removed to get everything grinded, sanded and primered.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, 80'S PORSCHEEEE
Another lad who entered the forums with STYLE!
Congrats with the purchase! I'm excited to see what this thing is capable of!
These cars and the Boxter's are chosen for track days and autocross because they are light, cheap and not as tail happy as other porsche's like the 911
And these are great for swaps, a 1UZ-FE/2UZ-FE/3UZ will be great for a future swap because Aluminium japanese DOHC High revving V8's with good power!
Hopefully this car will be kicking asses in the track in no time!

Thanks for the support. National Speed has a great fab department and tuner that can get anything working "right", so my engine options should only be limited by what'll fit in the bay

*....BACK AGAIN WITH MORE UGHHHHHH!*

Dug deeper into inspecting the undercarriage and suspension components to conclude that most of the factory suspension was tore to shit, or rusted out. I reached out to Paragon Products and they got me straightened out with alot of my needs.

...SOME MORNING STUFF...

Wheels got delivered this morning, took them straight to get blasted and prepped for paint. In the mean time I was checking out the GS I seen on Copart. Almost no damage and potential to be a 3oo-500V$ 2JZ donner vehicle? Or a quick buy and sell to find something better...

that GS300 2JZ could very well go into the 944!
Just get an NA-T turbo kit and you'll be pushing considerable amounts of power reliably :D

Get that GS man! You can throw the JZ inside the 944, get a turbo kit for it just like what Niatross said, and et viola, POWEEEEEEER! :D As for the GS chassis, you can keep it as a daily and put somehing else to power it up. Oh I don't know, 1UZ? 2UZ? an LS? Another JZ? Either way, the choice is yours ;)

***....AFTER A LOT OF TIME TURNING WRENCHES...***

Got a ton of parts in last week (sorry for the lack of updates), but it was a lot of trial and error, cut and fab, and "get a bigger hammer!" type work going down. 90% of the body is back together and fitted correctly as well as all the brake and suspension parts *all ordered just after my last update last week*.

For the suspension, I went back with Paragon Products and ordered the Koni Cup competition coil-over kit, which seemed to be the best bang for my buck!

With the upgraded rotors I went with, I needed to match them with bigger race spec calipers. I was pointed in the direction of Wagens West who specialize in older VW, Audi and Porsche. I snatched up some Wilwood 4 piston calipers with all the mounting and other direct fit hardware right out the box.

I got on the phone with the crew over at Rad Performance here in NC and got a great price on getting the factory Porsche Teledial wheels wrapped in a set of BF Goodrich GForce Sport tires too.

Can't go wrong with the good ol' phone dials! Those were a factory option for the 944 too. Now that it got a brake kit and coilovers it should drive perfectly, can't wait for some engine work so it'll be ready to go! :D

We are ditching the M44 engine because of extent of engine damage and found wayyyyy more fun options that I want to explore. Keeping a watch on the budget, I would say my price cap on engine, trans, parts and fab work is 6k MAX.

***...since I lack impulse control...***

Spent the past few days contemplating engine options. I threw out the idea of grabbing the GS300 and swapping over and boosting the US spec 2JZ, but after lots of research I decided not to take that route. The non-jdm spec 2JZ-GE's aren't the best platform for taking more than low boost without considerable head and rotating assembly reworking. I was about to pull the trigger on either a jdm 1J, 2J or RB25, considering its a cool 2000V$ for a complete swap "kit" that has potential to handle a considerable amount of power. Even with a solid deal on a full engine package, I took a look back to Copart one more time to see if I could come across some a little more....."different". I shuffled thru pages of "anything other than an LS swap" and after a few hours searching *BOOM* the perfect doner vehicle popped up. I didn't consider this to be an option, nor could I find any history of anything doing this swap. With cash card ready to go and the vehicle being pure sale, I placed a starting bid and it went on the block immediately. After many "back and forth" minimal bids ringing in *I KNOW THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS JUST TRYING TO RUN THE PRICE UP* I scored a badass doner for my project at 1900V$ + 1400V$ shipping. :D :D
